Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has praised manager Arne Slot’s impact after the club clinched their 20th English top-flight title on Sunday, ending Manchester City’s four-year reign. The Reds secured the Premier League crown in style, dismantling Tottenham 5-1 at a jubilant Anfield with four games to spare.
Slot, who succeeded Jürgen Klopp in July 2024, introduced a new style of play that Konate believes was key to Liverpool’s success. “I think he brings something new, like the style of playing,” said the 25-year-old centre-half. “Just before we started the season he showed us why we didn’t win the league the year before, some details, and he said if we change that and improve on that we have a big chance to win the league. And that’s what we’ve done since the start of the season. We have to be happy.”
Slot’s move from Klopp’s intense pressing system to a more controlled, possession-based approach paid dividends. Despite his significant influence, Slot celebrated in understated fashion, walking behind the players during the Anfield celebrations. Konate admired his humility, noting, “I saw him on the pitch and he didn’t really want to take the praise, he walked behind us and it’s crazy to be humble like that. Ok, we are on the pitch and we run and do everything but he has done a lot as well for us. Thanks to him, thanks to the fans.”
Konate himself formed a formidable partnership with captain Virgil van Dijk at the heart of Liverpool’s defence, playing a crucial role throughout the season. Though he is entering the final year of his contract, Konate remained tight-lipped about his future, simply stating it was “a conversation with the club.”
Reflecting on the achievement, Konate expressed deep emotion. “It’s the most important for a player because when you retire, it’s the only thing you really remember, you still have it between your hands. Especially to win the Premier League — what a trophy,” he said.
After the final whistle, Konate took a quiet moment to soak in the atmosphere. “I walked into the stadium and just sat in the stands to feel like a fan, and I don’t have words to describe what I felt. I just wanted to enjoy the moment on my own,” he shared.
Having fulfilled a childhood dream, Konate added, “Since I was young, I watched this league every week, every game, and now to win it is crazy. I’m the first French player from Liverpool to lift it. Unbelievable.”
