Liverpool had a Harvey Elliot stunner in the first half to thank as the Reds moved into the next round of the competition 3-2 on aggregate. The first leg at Anfield ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw which needed a replay.
The replay on Tuesday at the Molineux saw Liverpool coming from a 3-0 loss to Brighton at the weekend in the Premier League.
A largely second-string Liverpool saw Cody Gakpo starting up front in between Elliot and Carvalho while Kelleher started in goal in place of Allison.
Harvey Elliott produced a moment of brilliance in the 13th minute of the game as he drove the ball down to the Wolves’ box before unleashing a ferocious shot that beat the goalkeeper for the only goal of the game.
Even though the Wolves had the opportunity of scoring, the home side failed to hit the back of the net, which Spanish manager Julian Lopetegui rued after the game.
“I think we started to play well. We had two or three clear situations – not chances but clear situations. We conceded a goal out of nothing. It’s not easy playing against Liverpool, but in my opinion, we deserved more in the second half. We wanted to go so far in the cup. We’re sad, of course. The most important is the Premier League, but while competing in the cup, we had a big will to win in it.” Lopetegui said.
Wolves will now focus on the Premier League as they continue to steer clear of the relegation waters with a clash against Manchester City at the weekend.
Liverpool, on the other hand, will face Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Manchester United will face Crystal Palace in the Premier League, while Leeds United will play an FA Cup replay against Cardiff.
