Liverpool were in a spot of bother at the start of the new season as they failed to register wins even after three Premier League match days. The Reds were thin on squad depth as a major chunk of their midfielders were injured and therefore they even lost to arch rivals Manchester United in that time period. However a strong statement win over Bournemouth and a sneaky last minute win against Newcastle United have allowed them to come back on track.
So looking at the clear lack of options in midfield Jurgen Klopp took a punt and decided to sign Brazilian international Arthur Melo on loan. The Brazilian has shown sparks of his brilliance for Barcelona and even at Juventus but he has failed to keep that constant over a large span of time and that is exactly why he was shipped out of the Camp Nou.
It is a year long loan deal for now but Liverpool do have the option to sign him permanently for £32.3 million. It remains to be sen whether this is a depth signing or once again Klopp has seen something that he usually sees in his players and is about to revive the career of Arthur going forward in Merseyside.
However once the entire team is available it will be tough for the Brazilian midfielder to make a case in the starting eleven as they have played Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, youngsters like Harvey-Elliot and Curtis Jones. They also have the likes of Alex Oxalade Chamberlain and Naby Keita. But injury has been a major concern for them off late. However now with some backupKlopp will be more than relieved as Arthur will also be looking to prove his worth at the new club.
“We talked a lot, and our ideas and visions were a good fit so I’m sure it was the right choice,” the Brazilian told the Liverpool official website. “I’m really happy and highly motivated to continue living my dream on the pitch and giving my all in a Liverpool shirt.” The Braziian was delighted to know about Klopp’s interest in him and is eager to work with the German tactician who has taken the Reds from the shadows of nowhere to the top of European glory in the last few years.
There are reports that suggest that since Curtis Jones is also on his way back from injury and Thiago also following suit, the need of a big midfield signing was not considered necessary by the Reds and therefore they came up with an alternative. When they got the news that Arthur Melo is available on a loan deal Klopp was sure that this is the kid of player that he needs in his team.
It is clear that the club always wanted someone who is very proven and has experience of playing at top club to take up the position of playing at the base of the midfield and Arthur Melo fits that description perfectly even as a short term solution for the Merseyside outfit.
