Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the tie between Manchester City and Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday to conveniently end the defending champions’ unbeaten run start to the 2022/2023 Premier League season.
Pep Guardiola’s side, who won the league last season, had played nine games and won 7, dropping points just twice before Sunday’s clash with the Reds.
In contrast, Liverpool had only won just two of their Premier League games this season.
The game started with all eyes on Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, he leads the premier league top scorers chart with 14 goals, but the summer acquisition from Borussia Dortmund was quite inefficient for the Cityzens.
The best the Norwegian striker was to opening the score line was a header that was well saved by Allison Becker without any problem.
The same thing happened to Liverpool, whose best chance of the first half fell to Diogo Jota, who headed into the hands of Ederson as both sides went into the halftime break level on a goalless draw.
The second half also took the same tone as the first, with half-chances and tight curls for both sides.
However, Liverpool went into the lead through Mohamed Salah, who was let through after defender Joao Cancelo slipped while contesting for a high ball.
The Egyptian slid the ball past Ederson in goal in the 76th minute in what was the eventual winning goal of the game to put an end to Manchester city’s 21-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola set aside did everything well but only made a mistake which Liverpool punished.
“We did everything; we played really well and created chances. Most of the time, we were really good, but we made a mistake. They were so clinical and so good.” Guardiola said.
The result means Manchester City are now four points behind Arsenal, who top the table after their 1-0 win at Leeds United.
