Liverpool delivered a resounding 2-0 victory over defending Premier League champions Manchester City at Anfield, extending their lead at the top of the table to 11 points. The win marked City’s fourth consecutive league defeat, their worst run under manager Pep Guardiola.
The match was characterized by Liverpool’s relentless pressure, with City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega forced to make several key saves in the opening stages. However, the visitors’ resistance was eventually broken when Mohamed Salah produced a pinpoint cross for Cody Gakpo to bundle home at the back post. The goal marked a deserved lead for Liverpool, who had dominated the proceedings.
City’s struggles continued in the second half, with Liverpool creating several scoring opportunities. Gakpo saw a shot blocked while Virgil van Dijk headed another chance over the bar. Salah sealed the game with 12 minutes from time, slotting home a penalty kick to seal the win for Liverpool.
Liverpool skipper Van Dijk refused to get overly excited over the eleven-point gap that the result has created but rather focused on the next tests.
“I think City is a fantastic team. Four-time champions in a row. They have the quality to punish any team. But I think we were solid defensively and had great chances. We could have scored more. Good game. We won. And we move on. We focus on the next game. That’s the only thing we can do. There’s no point at this stage of the season to get ahead of ourselves.” He said.
The victory marked a commanding performance from Liverpool, who have now beaten the champions of England, Spain, and Germany at Anfield this season. The Reds sit nine points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table, while City’s defeat leaves them outside the top four.
The loss marked a new low for Manchester City, who are now without a win in seven matches across all competitions. Guardiola’s men will need to regroup and find a way to stop their losing streak if they are to remain in contention for the Premier League title.
