Liverpool have not been at their best this season as they have struggled for consistency in the Premier League especially. The Reds have been very unlucky with injury concerns and waning form of some of their players hence the depth is not ideal for Jurgen Klopp with the fixtures coming thick and fast.
Virgil Van Dijk who has been the pillar in defence for the club from Merseyside also has not had his best season. He recently sat down for an interview with Gary Neville where they spoke about different things in and around the club and English football in general. The Dutch centre back was asked to pick a player whom he would like to join Liverpool. Van Dijk named Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne mainly due to his excellence as a midfielder and also his consistent performance for their title rivals.
The Belgian superstar joined Manchester City in 2015 and since then he has evolved as one of the best players in the world right now with consistent performances. He has guided the Citizens to four Premier League titles as City also reached the Champions League finals once.
Van Dijk also had a great impact ever since he joined Liverpool from Southampton and has helped the Reds win everything. But still he revealed how he would have won more trophies if Kevin De Bruyne was in his team.
“Someone that I’ve never played with before but would love at Liverpool is Kevin De Bruyne. He’s unbelievable, and if he would’ve played at Liverpool, we would’ve gone even further than what we have done. He’s outstanding, good on the ball, he presses high, scores plenty of goals, and has every attribute of a modern-day midfielder and footballer in general.,” Van Dijk told Neville.
Van Dijk also shared his thoughts regarding the England national team and was shocked to see his teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold not start for the Three Lions. He shared how England has many talented right backs. The Liverpool fullback has never been a England regular due to the presence of several fullbacks but Van Dijk feels that his teammate is too talented to be left out of the starting eleven.
“I was surprised to see Trent Alexander-Arnold not starting for England. England are very lucky to have many talented right-backs, maybe everyone grew up wanting to be the next Gary Neville!” the Dutch defender opined.
He shared that England has talents like Reece James and Kyle Walker but he believes despite Alexander-Arnold’s poor form he should make it to the England team due to his exceptional ability to win games single handedly. “They have Reece James and Kyle Walker, who are outstanding, but Trent should at the very least be in the squad. They play five at the back, which is a different role for him, but with his quality, if you give him the confidence he needs, he can be so valuable for England,” Van Dijk asserted.
