It was a 6-goal thriller at the Anfield Stadium on Wednesday evening as Liverpool came from behind to beat Leicester City on penalties to move into the next round of the competition.
Jurgen Klopp’s side featured a mix of squad players and first-team players while trying to bounce back from the 2-2 draw in the Premier League against Tottenham at the weekend.
However, the Foxes breezed into a 2-0 lead in the first half through Jamie Vardy. The English forward scored in the 9th and 13th minutes, but Alex Oxlade Chamberlain pegged one back Six minutes later before James Maddison gave Leicester a comfortable lead into halftime.
Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino scored in the 68th and 95th minute to force penalties. Liverpool won the shoot out 5-4 after Luke Thomas, and Ryan Bertrand’s misses spared Minamino’s blushes.
Elsewhere, Chelsea scored two late goals to move into the semi-finals when they beat Brentford 2-0 at the Hive.
A late Jorghino penalty was preceded by an own goal from Swedish Pontus Jason in the 80th minute.
Meanwhile, the London derby at the New White Hart lane saw Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur beat David Moyes’s West Ham United.
A flurry of goals in five first-half minutes saw Spurs take the lead in the 29th minute through Steven Bergwijn. West Ham drew level through Jarrod Bowen three minutes later, while Lucas Moura scored in the 34th minute to seal the win.
Manager at West Ham United David Moyes believes that his players and team were better on the night.
“We kept going, the players were there until the death trying to get back into the game. We were the better team in the second half, it was a tough game, we just let ourselves down on a couple of incidents in the first half.” Moyes said.
The semi-final draws will see Liverpool take on Arsenal while the derby continues for Spurs against Chelsea. The semi-finals will be played on the 3rd and 4th of January 2022.
