Liverpool are in deep trouble this season as they have struggled almost everywhere. The Reds are as low as eighth in the Premier League and they recently blew away a 2-0 lead to lose 5-2 against Real Madrid in the Champions League knockouts. They will have a chance to overturn the tie in the second leg but given their current form it looks improbable.
Jurgen Klopp has understood that his primary problem lies in the defense as the Merseyside outfit lacked composure at the back against Real Madrid as most of their goals were due to individual errors. It was truly an off day for the Liverpool backline and goalkeeper Alisson. So with the aim of freshening things up next season, Liverpool are eyeing to bring reinforcements especially to bolster the defense and midfield. Hence they have made RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol as their main target this summer.
According to several reports, the Croatian centre back has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs while Chelsea and Liverpool are the ones leading the race. The youngster almost joined Chelsea in the last window. But ultimately he stayed in Germany and now a summer move away from Leipzig is just a matter of time.
The youngster had a sensational World Cup in Qatar as he helped Croatia finish third in the quadrennial tournament. His performances at the World Cup gave the teams an idea of how the youngster deals with pressure in high voltage games and he manages to keep his composure against top forwards. Gvardiol is known for his calm head, speed and exceptional positioning sense. He is also someone looking to pop up with a goal every now and then from a set piece.
“They (Liverpool) probably need someone in defensive positions too and this is why it’s going to be a crucial summer because it’s the end of the first era of Jurgen Klopp, who will surely be backed. Do keep an eye on Josko Gvardiol because many top clubs are monitoring him including, of course, Chelsea as they wanted him last summer. But Manchester City and Liverpool are also monitoring the player,” Fabrizio Romano stated in his YouTube video analyzing Gvardiol’s next destination.
Apart from a defender, Liverpool are also looking at different midfielders and among them the one name that has remained constant is of England international Jude Bellingham. They are also interested in Wolves star Mathues Nunes and Chelsea’s Mason Mount if the English midfielder decides to move away from Stamford Bridge.
“Liverpool are planning an important summer together with Jurgen Klopp. Jude Bellingham is going to be their top priority, of course, but they also have other names in the list. We know about Matheus Nunes from Wolves. We know about Mason Mount, but let’s see how the contract talks with Chelsea proceeds in the next months,” transfer expert Fabrizio Romano added.
However for now the Reds will look to improve their position in the Premier League and will also look to give their all in the second leg against Real madrid away from home. While it may be very difficult for a comeback, funnier things have happened in football in the past.
