Liverpool is back in the race to sign Kylian Mbappé, six years after they missed out on him initially. The French striker seems set to leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer, as he hasn’t shown willingness to extend his contract beyond the next year.
Mbappé, who is 24 years old, can become a free agent in 2024 according to the terms of the contract he signed last summer. With PSG looking to capitalize on his transfer value, Liverpool has surprisingly emerged as a potential destination.
Mirror Football reported on July 29 that Liverpool is attempting to negotiate a remarkable loan deal with PSG, which would allow Mbappé to play for Anfield during the 2023-24 season. This arrangement would enable him to fulfill his dream of moving to Real Madrid the following summer, if he chooses to do so. Additionally, it’s known that Mbappé holds admiration for Liverpool’s manager, Jürgen Klopp.
In 2017, Klopp and Liverpool made a significant effort to attract Mbappé to Anfield when it became apparent that he had outgrown Monaco. However, at the time, Mbappé opted for PSG, as he wasn’t convinced that joining Liverpool would be the best career move.
Despite missing out on him, Liverpool has continued to be linked with Mbappé, especially after he hinted at the possibility of taking on a new challenge outside of France before signing his latest contract with PSG.
While it remains uncertain whether Liverpool will succeed in signing Mbappé this time, it’s worth noting that the player’s mother and agent, Fayza Lamari, is a devoted Liverpool fan.
Although Mbappé appears content to fulfill the final year of his contract in Paris, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has made it clear that they will actively seek to sell him if he doesn’t commit to the club beyond 2024.
Recently, PSG accepted a record-breaking £259 million bid from Al-Hilal, but the deal fell through due to Mbappé’s reluctance to move to the Saudi Pro League.
