Argentina’s star footballer Lionel Messi credited the team’s Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez after they defeated Colombia on penalties in the Copa America 2021 semifinal. Martinez saved four penalties out of the six he faced in the penalty shootout as Argentina defeated Colombia 3-2 after the main match was drawn 1-1.
Martinez, who plays for Aston Villa in the English Premier League, has been unarguably the best goalkeeper of the ongoing Copa America. The Argentina gloveman has maintained three clean sheets in the tournament. Messi was all praise for the goalkeeper and stated that Martinez is a beast of a goalie.
“Penalty Shootout is total luck, but we knew Emiliano would stop at least 2. He deserves it, he is a monster of a keeper,” he said after the match.
“At times it became difficult, but we have Emiliano Martinez who is a phenomenon. We trusted him. We achieved the goal of being able to play every game and now we’re going through the final,” he added further.
Messi also took to Instagram after winning the semifinal against Colombia.
He wrote, “Proud and happy to belong to this group !!! One more goal accomplished … Thank you God for continuing to give me these moments. We go for the glory. Draw, without words, you deserve it BEAST !!!”.
Meanwhile, Messi was once again at his best as he dazzled past the Colombia defense with insane dribbling. In fact, Messi went on to play with a bleeding ankle and didn’t leave the field despite being injured.
Argentina will face Brazil in the final clash on 11th July, 5:30 am IST, at the Maracana Stadium. Thus, it will be Messi vs Neymar as two old friends will look to take their team to glory.
