The race for the La Liga title continues to remain unpredictable after League leaders Atletico Madrid were held by ten-man Getafe as Karim Benzema’s brilliance saved Real Madrid.
Diego Simeone’s men have seen their gap at the top of the La Liga table reduce to just six points in recent weeks with inconsistent results.
Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Getafe was another testament to the team’s inconsistency having lost two out of their last 5 matches before the game.
Although they defeated Villarreal and Athletic Bilbao in two of their last three matches, they were held by second-placed Real Madrid in the Madrid derby last week.
Zinedine Zidane’s men couldn’t win the derby but Karim Benzema who secured a point in that game was, on Saturday, responsible for getting three points from a losing position against opposition that Real should brush aside with ease.
Real hosted Elche at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium on Saturday and after a goalless first half, the visitors who had just two wins in their last eleven matches took the lead on the hour mark.
Then Karim Benzema restored parity ten minutes later before scoring a brilliant individual goal on the stroke of 90 minutes to complete the comeback for Real Madrid.
Real Madrid remains six points behind Atletico Madrid on the table but Barcelona is just one point behind them in the third position with a game in hand.
The Blaugrana will host Huesca at the Camp Nou on Monday evening and a win will give them 2 points above Real Madrid.
Meanwhile, Villarreal defeated Eibar 3-1 while Real Sociedad lost to Granada 1-0. Athletic Bilbao and Celta de Vigo played a 0-0 draw.
Osasuna played a 0-0 draw with Real Valladolid, Alaves and Cadiz played 1-1 while Levante defeated Valencia 1-0.
Barcelona are set to face bottom-placed Huesca on today.
