La Liga Chief Javier Tebas has revealed that he is unbothered about Mason Greenwood’s legal case history at Manchester United, and he would love to see the forward stay back in the La Liga at the end of his loan stint with Getafe.
The 22-year-old has been impressive this season in his season-long loan stint at Getafe, playing 22 games, scoring five goals, and making five assists during that duration.
The one-cap England international Greenwood was engulfed in a sexual assault case and was arrested in January 2022. He was suspended by Manchester United, but all charges against him were dropped in February 2023.
Fear of fan backlash made Manchester United consider releasing him before he was eventually loaned to Getafe. The possibility of a sale to European clubs outside England rose, but the sale of the Red Devils to Sir Jim Ratcliff brought a chance of bringing Greenwood back to Old Trafford.
However, Tebas is hoping Manchester United doesn’t go down that route of bringing Greenwood back to Old Trafford. He also believes Greenwood’s innocent status is enough for him to remain in the league, irrespective of other people’s opinions.
“I am a lawyer. If someone came out of a legal case innocent, there is nothing else to say. He is doing really well as a player, and I hope he continues to stay in Spanish football. That is good for us. You should respect the legal process. People might be condemning him in the press, but you have to respect the legal decision. There is nothing else to talk about. He wasn’t condemned [found guilty] here, so I don’t care.” Javier Tebas said.
In all competitions, Greenwood has scored seven goals in 25 appearances in all competitions for the club this season. Getafe lost 4-0 to Barcelona in their last game in La Liga, and they will host Las Palmas on Saturday.
