Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has stated that the club’s latest signing, Dominik Szoboslai, isn’t just for next season but also for the future of the Reds. Szoboslai joined Liverpool on a five-year contract after the Premier League club triggered the Hungarian’s release clause.
Liverpool paid Bundesliga club RB Leipzig 70m euros (£60m) to make the 22-year-old midfielder their second signing of the summer after Alexis McAllister’s arrival from Brighton for £35M.
Klopp stated that the club has been monitoring the midfielder, who won two German cups in the last two seasons and has been under the Red’s radar for seasons now and has put in the effort to get their player.
“This is a signing for our present and also for our future, and the work that has gone into it could not be more appreciated. We already have a little knowledge of Dominik as an opponent because we had a couple of really tough games against RB Salzburg when he was a player there, and I think everyone who saw those fixtures will have realized that even at that stage, he was a really interesting prospect,” said Klopp.
Liverpool had their first introduction to Szoboslai when he was still a teenager at Salzburg and faced the team in the UEFA Champions League in 2019 in the group stage.
Klopp believes the player has since then made some big strides after moving to Leipzig, doing well in the Bundesliga, playing for the Hungary national team, and then becoming captain of his national team at a young age.
Liverpool’s move for Dominik Szoboslai was further hastened by the move of Mason Mount to Manchester United as Liverpool was initially interested in the midfielder, but the Hungarian joined instead and has been given the number 8 jersey, which was made iconic by former skipper Steven Gerrard.
