Tottenham forward Harry Kane became the second England player to reach 50 goals after scoring a late penalty on Tuesday evening to secure a 1-1 draw for the Three Lions of England against Germany in the UEFA Nations League.
Both Germany and England failed to win their opening Nations League matches, with England losing 1-0 to Hungary in Budapest while Germany were held to a 1-1 draw by Italy.
While Italy and Hungary faced each other in the group’s other game, Germany faced England wearing their female national team’s jersey in support of the Women’s national team ahead of the Euro 2022 Women’s championship, which starts in July.
The game is the first time both Germany and England will be facing each other since they played each other in the UEFA Euro 2020 Championship semi-final at Wembley in 2021.
On that occasion, Gareth Southgate led his England side to the final ahead of Germany, but on Tuesday evening, they were dominated by the hosts for the majority of the first half.
However, both sides went into the break level without a goal to show for their efforts, but Germany went into the lead in the second half when Jonas Hofmann’s strike was deflected past Jordan Pickford five minutes after the break.
The hosts were set for their first victory of the Nations League campaign, but a VAR review awarded England a penalty with four minutes left to play.
Harry Kane stepped up and score to move ahead of Sir Bobby Charlton on England’s record scoring list with 50 goals. He is now surpassed only by Wayne Rooney with 53 goals.
Italy defeated Hungary to move four points at the top of the group while Germany are third behind Hungary. England remains rooted at the bottom of the table with a single point with two behind Hungary and one point behind Germany.
