World Cup-winning Spanish footballer Juan Mata has joined the ownership group of Major League Soccer’s (MLS) expansion club, San Diego FC, marking a historic moment in the league. Mata is now the first active international player to hold an ownership stake in MLS, joining the likes of David Beckham, who owns Inter Miami CF.
“Joining San Diego FC as a partner is an exciting opportunity to help build something truly special in a city and league that are experiencing incredible growth,” Mata said in a statement.
He highlighted the club’s commitment to community engagement through initiatives like the Right to Dream Academy, noting that it “aligns perfectly with my own values.”
Mata talked about his eagerness to bring his experience and passion for football to his new role and help establish San Diego FC as an inspiring club both on and off the pitch.
San Diego FC, which will make its MLS debut in 2025, has garnered attention for its ambition and innovative approach. Mata’s inclusion as a partner is expected to bring global recognition and credibility to the club as it enters the league.
Juan Mata has been a prominent figure in international football for over a decade. A graduate of Real Madrid’s youth academy, he rose to prominence with Valencia CF, winning the Copa del Rey in 2008. His move to Chelsea FC in 2011 brought him further acclaim as he helped the club secure the UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, and UEFA Europa League titles, earning Player of the Year honors twice.
In 2014, Mata joined Manchester United, where he won the FA Cup, EFL Cup, and Europa League during a nine-season stint. More recently, he captured league titles with Galatasaray in Turkey and Vissel Kobe in Japan before signing with Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia’s A-League in September.
Mata was also instrumental in Spain’s golden era, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 UEFA European Championship.
Beyond the pitch, Mata is celebrated for founding the Common Goal initiative, through which he pledges 1% of his salary to social causes. His work with this program reflects his commitment to using football as a force for good, a vision he shares with San Diego FC.
Mata’s involvement in MLS ownership sets a precedent for active players exploring roles beyond their playing careers. His influence is expected to resonate across the league as San Diego FC embarks on its journey in MLS.
