England will be without Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson and Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling in Wednesday’s UEFA Nations League tie against Iceland.
Jordan Henderson featured in England’s 2-0 defeat by Belgium on Sunday, he was substituted at half time the game, but Raheem Sterling missed the game.
Both players will miss the game due to injury. Liverpool captain Henderson felt a tightness in his leg before his substitution, but Manchester City forward Sterling missed the match with a calf issue.
They will now return to their clubs for further assessment ahead of the Premier League resumption this weekend.
Their departure has left Gareth Southgate with a 22-man team to prepare for Wednesday’s game. The loss to Belgium meant that the Three Lions would not be playing at the UEFA Nations League final next year.
Meanwhile, Manchester City will face Tottenham at the New White Hart Lane Stadium on Saturday while Liverpool host Leicester on Sunday at the Anfield stadium.
England has won one and lost the other two matches that they have played in November’s international break.
Their first game of the international break was against Ireland in an international friendly, and Gareth Southgate’s men got a 3-0 win with Harry Maguire, Jadon Sancho, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring.
The 2-0 loss to Belgium was in the nation’s league as they sit third, 3 points behind second-placed Denmark who trail Belgium with 2 points with a match to spare in Group 2 of League A.
Iceland are rock bottom on the table without a point from the 5 matches played so far. Belgium are top with 12 points and will only secure a place in the UEFA Nations League final if they avoid defeat to the visiting Denmark side.
