Joao Cancelo’s desire to join Barcelona has gained traction as the Portuguese defender has reportedly urged the Catalan club to accelerate their negotiations with Manchester City.
According to the Spanish outlet Sport, Cancelo is keen on making his loan spell permanent after a successful stint at Barcelona last season, where he made 42 appearances, contributing four goals and five assists. However, Manchester City is hesitant to agree to another temporary deal and prefers a permanent transfer or a loan with an option to buy.
Cancelo’s future at Manchester City remains uncertain following a reported falling-out with manager Pep Guardiola, prompting the 30-year-old to seek opportunities away from the Etihad Stadium. Despite his interest, Barcelona faces financial constraints that might complicate a permanent deal, especially after recent acquisitions, including Pau Victor from Girona and the anticipated signing of Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig for €62 million.
The right-back position, where Cancelo primarily plays, may not be Barcelona’s top priority. The club already has options like Jules Kounde, Julian Araujo, and Hector Fort. Thus, it’s unclear if Xavi’s side will pursue Cancelo’s signing amidst these considerations.
Meanwhile, Manchester United has revived its interest in Barcelona’s midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The Red Devils have reportedly approached Barcelona regarding the Dutch midfielder, who was a target for United back in the summer of 2022. At that time, while the clubs had reached an agreement, de Jong opted to stay with Barcelona to fight for his place.
De Jong made 30 appearances for Barcelona last season, scoring two goals despite missing almost four months due to injury. With the potential arrival of Dani Olmo, along with the presence of Pedri and Ilkay Gundogan, de Jong’s playing time at Barcelona might be reduced. This situation could make a move to Old Trafford appealing for the Dutch midfielder.
Manchester United is in search of a midfield partner for academy prospect Kobbie Mainoo, with links to players such as Manuel Ugarte, Martin Zubimendi, and Sofyan Amrabat, as they look to bolster their midfield options.
