La Liga chief Javier Tebas revealed on Monday that Hansi Flick’s Barca side can make a new signing outside the transfer window in the wake of a season-ending injury to its captain, Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
The German goalkeeper was tearful while he was stretchered off the pitch away at Villarreal on Sunday, with his serious knee knock overshadowing other major highlights in his side’s impressive 5-1 hammering of the Yellow Submarines.
With the win, the Blaugrana extended their one hundred percent record in La Liga and maintained a four-point lead over bitter rivals Real Madrid at the summit.
After Sunday’s horrible event with its goalkeeper, Barca began weighing options to get an interim replacement for Ter Stegen,
Speaking on Monday, Tebas not only confirmed that President Joan Laporta and Sporting Director Deco can bring in another goalkeeper but also assured that the player in question might also operate in another area of the pitch if need be.
“Our rules allow the integration of a player with equal salary as the injured player. It can incorporate a player, whether it is a goalkeeper or not,” Tebas clarified on Monday morning in Spain.
The La Liga numero uno further stated that Barca’s economic situation has been “greatly exaggerated,” claiming that it used to be on the cusp of chapter 11 at the turn of the decade after the contagion – COVID-19.
While Tebas’ assessment may be true, it’s pertinent for Barca to think about the biggest worry for the club since the appointment of Hansi Flick: whether it should trust Inaki Pena or a La Masia talent between the sticks.
In that case, it could look to strengthen another position or instead go for a more experienced goalkeeper capable of leading Barca’s title onslaught against rivals Real Madrid. Barcelona will host Getafe in the La Liga in a seven-match matchday fixture on Wednesday.
