England manager Gareth Southgate has called up Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse to replace Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.
Phillips was injured in weekend’s 1-0 win against Watford and effectively pulled out of the Three Lions’ team for October’s international break.
Leeds United confirmed in a statement that the player will be staying at Elland Road to receive treatment from the club’s medical doctors.
Meanwhile, 26-year old Ward-Prowse has 8 caps for the national team with a goal to top it and will be hoping to add to that tally when England faces Andorra and Hungary in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
Similarly, Gareth Southgate handed a recall to AS Roma forward Tammy Abraham and Ben Chillwell as both players joined up with the team on Tuesday at the St George’s Park.
24-year old Ben Chillwell, who was part of England’s squad to the Euros this summer, will be filling in in the absence of Manchester United’s Harry Maguire and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander Arnold. Chelsea teammate Reece James is also ruled out due to injury.
Meanwhile, Tammy Abraham’s four goals in ten Serie A matches have been rewarded with a recall.
The former Chelsea forward joined Jose Mourihno’s Roma in the summer and has been in good form.
He makes a return to the national team since his last appearance in November 2020 and will hope to add to his single international goal for the Three Lions.
Also part of the squad for the October international break are AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori, Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
England will on October 9 play Andorra away before facing Hungary at home on 12 October.
Gareth Southgate’s side have sixteen points from six matches played and comfortably sitting on top of Group I.
