Manchester United superstar Erling Haaland continues his domination in the Premier League. The lanky striker scored his record-breaking 35th Premier League goal of the season during Cityzens’ 3-0 win on Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium.
The 22-year-old Norwegian had joined the likes of Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer for joint-most goals in a season (34) earlier when he had scored from a spot kick against Fulham.
Meanwhile, Haaland went past these two players when he scored in the 70th minute against West Ham. Nathan Ake and Phil Foden also scored for the Sky Blues and all three goals came in the second half.
Haaland was delighted to make history and was proud after breaking the record.
“It’s a special night and a special moment. I’m really happy and proud. I don’t know what else to say,” Haaland told Sky Sports. “I knew about the record, of course, but we tried to create chances to score and it wasn’t easy because they wanted to defend. We struggled in the first half but they eventually came.”
On the other hand, Manchester United boss Pep Guardiola heaped praise on his striker. The Spaniard added that Haaland deserves this record and also hailed the team’s role in helping the forward achieve the same.
“I think he deserved it, all the team deserved it because without the team he couldn’t do it,” City boss Pep Guardiola said after the match. “We are very pleased for him, he is a joy — not just to work with him — everyone is happy to have him with us. Of course, this record will be broken sooner or later, maybe by him in the future. He will score a lot of goals.
“Of course, when there is a special occasion we have to show how special it is. Today it was with Erling and to overcome the position of Andy Cole and Alan Shearer. They are incredible top strikers so it’s special.”
Manchester United will next take on Leeds United on Friday night.
