International Friendlies: Netherlands Brush Aside Iceland but Lose De Jong for Euros

The Netherlands concluded their European Championship preparations with a resounding 4-0 victory over Iceland at De Kuip in Rotterdam. This emphatic win mirrors their earlier 4-0 triumph against Canada, signaling the team’s strong form heading into the tournament. However, the celebration was tempered by the disheartening news that star midfielder Frenkie de Jong will not join the squad in Germany due to an ankle injury that he hasn’t fully recovered from.

Despite De Jong’s absence, optimism remains high among the Dutch faithful. The Oranje possess a wealth of talent capable of making a deep run in the Euros. One such standout is Xavi Simons, the highly touted Paris Saint-Germain midfielder.

Simons, a former Barcelona academy star, showed his potential by opening the scoring against Iceland. Positioned expertly, he received a headed pass from Denzel Dumfries and directed it into the net from close range, setting the tone for the evening.

The Netherlands extended their lead early in the second half. Just four minutes after the break, captain Virgil van Dijk scored his second headed goal in as many games, demonstrating his aerial ability. The Oranje continued to dominate, with Donyell Malen adding a third in the 79th minute. Malen latched onto a superb pass from Memphis Depay that dissected the Icelandic defense before calmly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper.

Wout Weghorst completed the rout in stoppage time, converting from close range after receiving a precise cross from Malen. This commanding performance highlights the Netherlands’ attacking depth and defensive solidity, key factors as they aim for European glory.

Meanwhile, Georgia is set to make its debut at the European Championship this summer. The Jvarosnebi will face Turkey, the Czech Republic, and Portugal in the group stage, with even a third-place finish potentially securing advancement to the knockout rounds. In their sole pre-tournament friendly, Georgia secured a 3-1 victory over Montenegro in Podgorica on June 9. Goals from Otar Kiteishvili, Georges Mikautadze, and Budu Zivzivadze highlighted their readiness for the continental stage.

The Czech Republic also concluded their warm-up fixtures with a win, defeating North Macedonia in Hradec Králové. The match was decided by penalties, with Fiorentina’s Antonin Barak scoring the decisive spot-kick in the 98th minute. This win will boost the Czechs’ confidence as they prepare to navigate a challenging group featuring England, Croatia, and Scotland.

As the European Championship approaches, teams are fine-tuning their strategies and solidifying their squads. The Netherlands, despite the setback of losing De Jong, look poised to be a formidable force. Their recent performances suggest that they are ready to compete at the highest level, with young talents like Simons stepping up to fill the void left by injured stars. The tournament promises to deliver thrilling matches and unforgettable moments as Europe’s best teams vie for continental supremacy.
