Benfica manager Jorge Jesus was shocked at Haris Seferovic’s missed chance against FC Barcelona. The Portuguese outfit had a golden opportunity to win the game against the Blaugrana and seal a spot in the Champions League knockouts but a shocking miss from Seferovic made things difficult for Benfica.
The chance came from a fast counter as it ended up with Seferovic beating the goalkeeper but failing to steer his shot on goal meant that the match ended in a 0-0 draw. Jorge Jesus fell to the ground in disappointment after Seferovic’s missed chance.
“In 30 years as a coach, I’ve never seen anything like this, but it happened,” Jesus told the CNN Portugal. “To me and to Benfica.”
Benfica will now have to beat Dynamo Moscow in the last round of the Champions League and hope that Bayern Munich beats FC Barcelona at the Allianz Stadium.
Jorge Jesus was still happy with his team’s performance as they managed to hold out Barcelona to a 0-0 draw. This result opened up the group for the last round as both Benfica and Barcelona still stand a chance to qualify for the Champions League knockouts. A win against Dynamo Moscow will help their case considerably but they will need Barcelona to draw or lose against Bayern Munich in the last round.
“The team created opportunities, we left with a result that makes us dream [of advancing], it doesn’t depend on us,” he said. “We have a chance when there’s only one game left. We’re in the mix with Barcelona, a team that aims to win the Champions League.
“This can only make us proud to the fans because the team behaved like a great team here.”
It was a game where Barcelona created a lot of chances and even scored but was ruled out due to offside. The likes of Gavi, Yusuf Demir, Nicolo Gonzalez played a big role for the Blaugrana but were not able to find the target. Substitute Ousmane Dembele was exceptional since coming on as he threatened the Benfica backline multiple times but once again was wasteful in front of goal.
