Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has praised midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, calling him “one of the best players I ever trained in my career.” The German midfielder has been a key player for City since he was signed in 2016, scoring 56 goals and providing 38 assists in 298 appearances.
Guardiola spoke about Gundogan’s versatility, highlighting a game in the 2018-19 season when the German played as a holding midfielder in the absence of Fernandinho. “In games like Burnley, long balls, second balls, and he played – wow! I had the feeling that without him we wouldn’t be able to win the Premier League,” Guardiola said, via the Mirror.
Gundogan’s performance this season has been impressive, as he has been one of City’s standout performers in their Premier League and Champions League campaigns. He scored a crucial brace in City’s 2-1 win over Leeds United on May 6, and Guardiola has been particularly impressed with his all-around game.
The 32-year-old’s ability to score, create, and do the defensive work has been a vital asset to City this season. “He barely has a weak point in his game,” Guardiola said. “He’s so intelligent, Gundo. So clever. So competitive. Under pressure, he handles it without a problem. The whole package. He’s top, top class.”
Gundogan will be hoping to continue his fine form when City face Real Madrid in the first-leg of their Champions League semi-final tie on May 9. With Guardiola singing his praises, the German midfielder will be looking to make a big impact as City aim to reach their first Champions League final under the Spaniard’s leadership.
