While Mats Hummels recently announced his retirement on social media following the conclusion of his season with AS Roma.
Yet the former German International could be enticed to hold off on hanging up his boots, especially if it means putting on a Black and Yellow kit once again.
After Nico Schlotterbeck’s season-ending injury, speculation began rising in regard to a potential return of Mats Hummels.
The club was already in need of another solid center-back, and losing Schlotterbeck was a huge blow.
The general thought was for BVB to pursue the signature of another defender this summer, but doing so before the middle of June seems unfeasible.
A player like Mats Hummels, who has spent the majority of his career with BVB and maintained a good relationship with the hierarchy, for the most part, could slot into Dortmund’s back line with some ease.
Many of the current squad have already played alongside the veteran since he’s not even a year removed from the club.
Matt Hummels might not be what Dortmund needs right now, but he could join the club quickly, and his leadership could certainly help the locker room.
Only time will tell if we see a formal competitive return of Mats Hummels, or a simple appreciation match at the end of the summer.
