Hummel’s potential return to Dortmund draws closer

While Mats Hummels recently announced his retirement on social media following the conclusion of his season with AS Roma.

Yet the former German International could be enticed to hold off on hanging up his boots, especially if it means putting on a Black and Yellow kit once again.

After Nico Schlotterbeck’s season-ending injury, speculation began rising in regard to a potential return of Mats Hummels.

The club was already in need of another solid center-back, and losing Schlotterbeck was a huge blow.

The general thought was for BVB to pursue the signature of another defender this summer, but doing so before the middle of June seems unfeasible.

A player like Mats Hummels, who has spent the majority of his career with BVB and maintained a good relationship with the hierarchy, for the most part, could slot into Dortmund’s back line with some ease.

Many of the current squad have already played alongside the veteran since he’s not even a year removed from the club.

Matt Hummels might not be what Dortmund needs right now, but he could join the club quickly, and his leadership could certainly help the locker room.

Only time will tell if we see a formal competitive return of Mats Hummels, or a simple appreciation match at the end of the summer.

The Black and Yellows capped off the weekend with a crucial win over Hoffenheim when Pavel Kaderabek scored Hoffenheim’s second equalizer in the 90th minute, but more drama followed five minutes into stoppage time.

Waldemar Anton slotted into an empty net following a nasty collision between Carney Chukwuemeka and Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann, sealing BVB’s fourth win in their last five league games.

They are now sixth in the Bundesliga with three games to play, just three points behind fourth-placed Freiburg with a superior goal difference.

Dortmund host Wolfsburg next week, with a trip to Bayer Leverkusen and a home match against relegation-threatened Holstein Kiel rounding out their campaign.
