Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has tipped Arsenal’s captain Martin Ødegaard as the best player of the season. The Norwegian has played a key role in the success of the Gunners in the ongoing season and Neville was full of praise for the midfielder.
Martin Ødegaard scored eight goals and provided as many assists in 34 Premier League matches for Arsenal in the 2023-24 season. Neville said he loves Declan Rice and Phil Foden but Ødegaard is an unbelievable football player.
Neville said via the Metro, “I didn’t have to think about it at all. I think every game I’ve watched of Arsenal, he’s a beautiful player. He knits everything together. I love Rice, I love Foden, but for me, that is an absolute unbelievable football player.
“He’s the best player in the league I’ve seen this season on a regular basis. He takes the balls on the half-turn, tries to play them through – the right type of passes. If he had, for instance, a striker who made those little darting runs like an Aguero, the amount of chances he creates is unbelievable. I think that’s his peak this season.”
On the other hand, Neville also picked Arsenal’s defender Ben White in his team of the season in the right-back position. White has scored four goals and provided five assists in 50 appearances for the Gunners.
Neville said on Sky Sports, “It was either Ben White or Trent Alexander-Arnold. But I just felt with the way that Arsenal has defended… I wasn’t sure about White- he fell in between, is he half a right-back and half a centre-back? That was my view of Ben White.”
“I wasn’t sure what he was, but he has developed into a really, really good right-back. I think of him now as the same sort of quality this season- for one reason- of how Ivanovic and Azpilicueta were for Chelsea for many years. I think he has done really well there and he deserves to be in,” he added.
Arsenal will take on Everton at the Emirates Stadium, on Sunday.
