Cristiano Ronaldo keeps churning out records. The Portuguese became the first player to scale down the mountain of 700 goals in his club career. Former English midfielder and current Everton coach Frank Lampard hailed Ronaldo after he scored against his team and tipped him as one of the greatest players to have graced the game.
Erik Ten Hag introduced Cristiano Ronaldo as he replaced an injured Anthony Martial in the 29th minute. Ronaldo was assisted by his former Real Madrid teammate Casemiro and found the back of the net with his left foot at the brink of halftime to help his team take a 2-1 lead.
Earlier, Alex Iwobi had scored for Everton in the fifth minute while Antony continued his good show as he scored his third goal in as many appearances.
Frank Lampard said (via The Guardian): “It is outstanding. He is one of the greatest players to have graced the game and in an era when we have had him and Messi. The comparisons between them doesn’t matter.”
He added: “They are both incredible players in football history. The numbers they have racked up are abnormal numbers that have become normal. When he was on 699, I wanted him to score in the Europa League the other night. But in the cold light of day, you have to give him credit. It is amazing.”
Ronaldo was disappointed after he was not given a chance by Erik Ten Hag when Manchester United was thrashed by Manchester City with a humiliating scoreline of 6-3. However, the Red Devils were able to bounce back stronger against Everton.
Ronaldo will likely feature in Manchester United’s next game as well when they host Omonia in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday.
