The result meant that Leicester City dropped into the last relegation spots, especially as Everton boosted their chances of Survival with an incredible 5-1 victory away at Amex Stadium to beat Brighton.
Braces from Abdoulaye Doucoure and Dwight McNeil, plus a first-half own goal from Jason Steele, secured the win that put the team two points above the drop zone.
At the City Ground, Taiwo Awoniyi a first-half brace to put Nottingham Forest on the path to a 4-3 win. Morgan Gibbs White and Danilo added two more goals for the home side while Carlos Alcaraz, Lyanco, and a late James Ward Prowse penalty made the contest competitive till the end.
The result moved Nottingham Forest three points clear of the drop zone, while Southampton are only mathematically safe from relegation if they win all remaining three games and Everton, Leicester City, and Leeds United lose all three games.
