West Ham United have strengthened their frontline after bringing in Gianluca Scamacca from Italian Seria A side Sassuolo for £30.5m.
The Hammers secured another appearance on the continent, albeit it was a UEFA Europa Conference League spot, after finishing in the semi-final of the UEFA Europa League last season, having lost to eventual champions Eintracht Frankfurt.
Scamacca has now signed a five-year contract becoming the Hammers’ fourth signing of the summer. David Moyes’ side have already secured the signing of defender Nayef Aguerd, midfielder Flynn Downes, and goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
He was Sassoulo’s top scorer in the Seria A last season and the second highest goalscorer in the league last season. He was linked with several clubs in Europe, including french champions PSG and Juventus.
The 23-year-old has previously featured for PSV and was an academy star for Roma and Lazio before his time in the Dutch Eredivisie.
The striker, who featured in the 0-0 draw between Italy and England in the UEFA Nations League in June at the Molineux Stadium, spoke of his delight at joining the London club, which fulfills his dream of playing in the Premier League.
“I’ve waited a long time for this moment – it’s been a dream to play in the Premier League. I am really excited to join West Ham – I feel like they are the perfect team for me. I can’t wait to play and show the supporters what I can do in the West Ham shirt – I hope we will love each other.” Scamacca said.
After finishing seventh in the Premier League last season, West Ham United targeted former Manchester United forward Jesse Lingard, but the England striker preferred a move to Nottingham Forest, who he has now joined on a free transfer.
The Hammers are also linked to Chelsea player Armando Broja.
