Brazil international Gabriel Jesus admits that he needs to be more of a proper striker to replace Argentine sensation Sergio Aguero as Manchester City’s highest goalscorer is set to leave the club at the end of his contract.
The Citizens have already bid their final farewell to Aguero who will leave the club after a glorious 10 years in the Premier League. He has been a superstar for the Manchester City faithful and it is a very emotional farewell.
Jesus who joined the club back in 2017 and has been slotting in for Aguero is less important fixtures wants to take up the role permanently once he leaves this summer.
In his recent interaction with Sky Sports, the Brazilian admitted that he has to change his style of play to replace Aguero whom he called the best player in Manchester City’s history.
“I can learn a little bit [from him] but he’s more of a proper striker than me, he scored more than me,” Jesus said.
“He goes to the pitch and he scores. He’s more striker than me, I can say that because I work with him every day and I play a lot with him.
“When we play together I score one, he scores two, I score two and he scores three. I think I’m going to learn a lot in these next years to become a proper striker who scores a lot.
“I have to go more in the box. Sometimes I don’t go in the box, that’s why I don’t score a lot. Normally if you see the best strikers at the moment they all go to the box, some of them go outside the box to create and then go to the box.
“Not me, I think my football is… I go outside the box, I create with my friends and I wait for the goal. Sometimes I go and I score, but I have to put in my head that when I arrive, I score.”
The 23-year-old has maturity beyond his years and also has that knack of scoring goals. His work rate as a striker also adds a new dimension to Pep Guardiola’s team and hands the Spaniard with more options. He has scored 80 goals in 183 appearances for the Citizens and has been a very important squad player.
Even with Aguero gone, Manchester City will bring another forward and as per reports, it can be Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland, Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku or Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane. Even Southampton’s Danny Ings has also become a shock entry as a cheaper option.
So Gabriel Jesus needs to keep working on himself as there will be competition for that no.9 spot at Manchester City even after Sergio Aguero’s departure.
