FC Barcelona have had their troubles in holding their best players in recent times in comparison to other top teams in Europe. But Dutch midfielder Frenkie De Jong has been a stalwart in midfield for the Blaugrana. He has been the leader of men in this FC Barcelona unit and has delivered consistent performances.
A lot was expected from him as he joined FC Barcelona from Ajax Amsterdam back in 2019. He started slowly but now he has developed himself as one of the best holding midfielders in the world right now. He is surely one of the first names in Xavi Hernandez’s teamsheet.
Rumours have been circulating that De Jong is looking to move away from Camp Nou. Teams like Manchester United, Bayern Munich have been linked with the Dutch international. But the midfielder himself has rubbished all the links during his interaction with Ziggosport. He instead shared how he has Barcelona in his heart.
“I love being at Barcelona! I’d probably sign a six-year contract extension if they’d propose me, yes. Something happening with FC Bayern? No, no. I am so happy at Barcelona and I would love to play here for as long as possible.”
The FC Barcelona faithful would love to see someone as talented as De Jong signing a long term contract. The Dutchman has all the qualities to replace Sergio Busquets in long term and his leadership skills are also not unheard of so Xavi can gradually pass on the armband to De Jong securing the future at Camp Nou.
FC Barcelona has found new form under the tutelage of Xavi as they defeated Galatasaray in the Europa League round of 16 and have progressed to the quarterfinals.
De Jong has developed with every passing game and is truly one of the most talented midfielders all around the world right now. The 24-year-old has a commanding presence in the middle of the park and his exquisite passing range make him the perfect player to feature for FC Barcelona. In 22 appearances this year, he has scored three goals and has managed three assists as a midfielder, but goalscoring is a very secondary trait for him. It is his determination, passing range, work rate and other on the ball capabilities that make him stand out above the rest.
