Netherlands midfielder Frenkie De Jong has revealed his side are fearless ahead of their Friday encounter with Argentina.
The Dutch side saw off a highly spirited USA in the round of 16, recording an emphatic 3-1 victory with Cody Gakpo’s brace and Daley Blind’s strike.
Attention are now turned towards Argentina. Lionel Scaloni’s side also prevailed over Australia in a 2-1 win as well.
With preparations in gear, De Jong has revealed they are confident of their tie against their south American opponents but revealed he has no idea how to stop their talisman, Lionel Messi.
Speaking to the media, the 21-year-old acknowledged the Argentines labeling them as a top side but took his stance of making life tough for the Scaloni’s led side.
“This team [Argentina ] is known by everyone and the kind of great players they have and also want to have that belief that they are going for a fight likewise. With this at the back of their minds, this means we are also a top side as well”. For me, I think it will be a balanced game,” he added.
Asked if there are tendencies of him stopping Lionel Messi, the midfielder chuckled as he praised his former teammate and also relinquished the chance to play against him.
“Leo is a fantastic guy. I’ve always known him back when he was in our team [Barcelona] the way he takes on three or more players in and around the box is what makes him such a dangerous player, and we are fully aware of that. He added.
Louis Van Gaal, on the other hand, will hope his side remains at their very best to progress and also outsmart Messi and his side. His hopes will likely be on Cody, who has been fantastic so far in this tournament.
