On Wednesday, the English Premier League announced the discovery of four new positive Coronavirus cases from the last set of testing done for players and coaches and staff of clubs in the top flight of English football.
According to the statement released by the league body on Wednesday, the cases came from a total number of 1008 players and club staffs tested while the infected persons will be isolated.
“The Premier League can today confirm that on Monday 25 May and Tuesday 26 May, 1008 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, four have tested positive from three clubs, Players or club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate for a period of seven days.” the statement read.
Although the Premier League has been in suspension since March, the league body put in place, ‘Project Restart’ to facilitate a restart of the league with players returning to limited group training on Tuesday.
Furthermore, the UK government gave the go-ahead for the resumption of sports to resume starting from 1 June.
Meanwhile, there has been a unanimous agreement and vote by Premier League clubs to resume contact training, which is phase two of Project Restart.
According to them, players will be able to train as a group and engage in tackling while minimizing unnecessary close contact. Also, the discussions as regards resumption are said to be continued until it is safe to do so.
Meanwhile, according to reports from the BBC, Premier League players and staff will continue to be tested twice a week for coronavirus.
A total of eight positive cases have been recorded among players and staff after 1,744 tests were done across the league.
