Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos is currently in a muddle as he is yet to decide his future. While some people feel that the 34-year-old may look beyond Real Madrid in search of a new challenge in which case he may not sign a new contract with Los Blancos. While others say that it is only a matter of time before both parties can compromise on their stance and get a contract renewal done.
Former Real Madrid centre back Fernando Hierro recently urged the club management to keep hold of one of their legends and also the best centre back in the club’s history. He also feels that the problem will be resolved very soon and Ramos will stay in Madrid.
Hierro recently shared his thoughts about the situation in his recent interview with El Confidencial as he said, “I think we (him and Ramos) are very similar, by character, by way of being. We also have a very good relationship.
“Sergio is a legend of Real Madrid and hopefully he will finish his sporting career at this club. I believe that players like him should finish in a great club.
“In the sporting aspect, he has conditions that I did not have and for me he is the best centre-back in the club’s history. That is clear to me because of everything he has represented and I am happy for him, without a doubt.”
However, despite several meetings between the defender and club president Florentino Perez in recent years, they have not yet come to terms with the renewal. Ramos only has the month of March to decide as it is the expiry date for the renewal handed over by the club.
For now, he is a free agent and several clubs including Paris Saint Germain and Manchester United are heavily interested in the veteran defender. But it is also true that only a handful of clubs can match the wage demand of Ramos and also fulfil the ambition of him fighting for a new challenge at the top level and that is despite him being at the twilight of his career.
At the moment, the 34-year-old is sidelined due a knee injury and is making progress to get back to the field soon. Real Madrid and Zinedine Zidane have missed him dearly and will hope that he returns as soon as possible.
Speaking of Zidane, Hierro feels that the Frenchman is the right man for the job as he understands the club and handles the dressing room very well. The Real Madrid legend added, “Apart from the admiration and personal affection that I have for him, I think he is someone who identifies with what Real Madrid are all about very well with his manner, his understanding of the club, of managing a dressing room and for his way of making statements to the press before and after each game.
“If I’m not mistaken, he is second on the list of Madrid coaches with the number of titles won.”
