Former Liverpool Centre back Jamie Carragher has named Harvey Elliot as the perfect replacement for Mohamed Salah at Anfield. The Liverpool legend claims Elliot to be the next generation superstar and deserves his chance in the starting lineup. He is sure that the youngster will cement his position very soon.
Salah is currently holding talks with the club but is nowhere near to penning a deal with the Reds. Reports suggest that the Egyptian has asked for reasonable terms but the Reds have refused to accept the terms for now.
Liverpool faced Inter Milan in the Champions League knockout rounds. Despite holding the Reds for 75 minutes, Internazionale could not find the killer blow. Liverpool struck first in the 75th minute through Roberto Firmino. Later Mohamed Salah doubled the lead in the 83rd minute to secure a great win for Jurgen Klopp’s men in the first leg of the round of 16 clash.
Before the match, Liverpool legend heaped praise on Harvey Elliot and indicated that he can replace Mohamed Salah if needed.
“You have someone really special here, maybe in terms of Mo Salah’s replacement, if that’s the position he plays in,” Carragher said. “Whenever Mo Salah goes, maybe you’ve got your ready-made replacement. Mo Salah is getting to 30 now and we’re all desperate for him to sign a contract. Maybe not the same type of player, but a guy that plays on the right and comes in on that left foot. Maybe he’ll be more creative or maybe he’ll get less goals, who knows, but he’s definitely a special player and, in the next 18 months, he’ll have to find a position for him in the team because players of that quality have to play.”
Another former Liverpool star Danny Murphy has claimed that Jurgen Klopp has secured the club’s future. Murphy believes that the likes of Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz, along with Elliot, will be replacing Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.
“When you look at the youngsters Klopp is bringing in, you can see he is trying to mix things up and change things a little bit. Luis Diaz looked tremendous [against Leicester], you’ve got Harvey Elliott on the way back, Curtis Jones is getting back to his best, Ibrahima Konate is young, Jota is firing in goals. You can see it’s a bit of a long-term plan going on with Liverpool at the moment.”
The Reds have a balanced lineup and are definitely one of the favourites to win the UEFA Champions League title. They will first look to get over Inter Milan and reach the quarterfinals. They are also challenging Manchester City for the Premier League title this season.
