Newly signed Chelsea striker Marc Guiu has denied that money influenced his move to the Premier League from La Liga-based Barcelona after revealing that it was always a dream to play in the Premier League.
The teenager has seen a lot of playing time for Chelsea on their pre-season tour of the US, which suggests a bigger playing role for him when the Premier League season starts at the Blues.
Chelsea paid around £5M to trigger his release clause after he rejected a contract extension at Barcelona. In the end, he scored just once in four pre-season games so far.
While Guiu insisted that the decision wasn’t a hard one to make, it was never an issue with his contract.
“It was not an issue with my contract. I’ve always dreamt of playing in the Premier League, and Chelsea is a great club with a lot of history. It was a tough decision but it was an amazing opportunity, so I had to go for it.” Guiu said.
However, he refused to mention whether he would have preferred to go on loan or stick with the Premier League team and hope for minutes. Rather, he stated that he is focused on the pre-season tour, doing his best as Enzo Maresca had intimated to him that there was an amazing sporting project full of young talent, of which he wanted Guiu to be a part.
He went on to state that the coach trusted his abilities and capabilities and would like to have him for the 2024/2025 season. Chelsea lost 4-2 to Manchester City on Saturday evening, with Erling Haaland scoring a hat trick while Oscar Bobb added another.
Marc Guiu played a half-hour of action in the match at the Ohio Stadium after coming on as a substitute for Argentinian star Enzo Fernandez. Raheem Sterling and Noni Madueke both found the net for the Blues.
