Arsenal are leading the Premier League points table as reigning champions Manchester City look to chase them straight till the finishing line. The Gunners have a three point lead over the Cityzens with a match in hand as Pep Guardiola’s men are looking to take advantage of every given opportunity. Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was told to make a pick between the North London outfit and Manchester City to win the League title and without any doubt he chose his former team.
When asked if Arsenal are in a better position to win the Premier League, he agreed and shared his reasons as he pointed towards City’s recent vulnerable defense. “I would say yes because I feel the usual threats in the Premier League are all out of the race, and the only threat is City, And even City is not as dominant as they were last year or two years before. And I feel since the start of the season, City was more vulnerable defensively than they were the years before,” Wenger shared his thoughts at The Boot Room.
Arsenal are currently at the summit of the Premier League points table with 51 points from 21 games whereas Guardiola’s men are at 48 points from 22 games. So Arsenal can easily make it a six point lead if they win the game in hand. So it is really very intense especially after Mikel Arteta’s men lost to relegation fighting Everton. SImilarly City also lost to Tottenham Hotspur and failed to close in the gap.
If Arsenal manage to hold on to the lead and secure the title then that will be their first title since 2003-04 Invincibles that the Gunners won under the tutelage of Arsene Wenger. Whereas Manchester City have made a habit of winning league titles under Guardiola.
However things are getting tighter as Arsenal have hit a lean patch and are going through a two game winless streak which includes a defeat against Everton and a 1-1 draw against Brentford. Arteta believes that his team will need to shift their focus to areas they can improve and work on them. The Gunners desperately need to forget the last couple of results and put on a fresh performance when they take the field again. A couple of more results here and there and the players will start taking the pressure which will only allow City to take their position at the summit.
“We need to move on really quickly in the league. There were a lot of things we did really well today and there are things that we have to improve on and do better, but it will be a completely different game against City,” Arteta said after the 1-1 draw against Brentford.
The Gunners will host their title challengers Manchester City next in the Premier League in a match that can decide a lot of factors. The result of this game may decide which way the title will swing this time. While Arteta got the better of Guardiola last time, the former Barcelona manager will be looking to outwit his former assistant as a part of his reply.
