English Premier League side Newcastle United on Tuesday night progressed into the next round of the English FA Cup after thrashing Rochdale by 4-1.
The League one side had weeks ago held the Toons to 1-1 draw to force a replay at the St. James Park on Tuesday evening.
Newcastle United got in front in the 17th minute as pressure on the visitor’s defence yielded results with Eoghan O’Connor scoring an own goal.
Two minutes later, Matthew Longstaff scored the Toons second goal before Paraguayan, Miguel Almiron scored a third in the 26th minute to take the lead beyond Rochdale.
However, despite the first-half dominance, the hosts could not replicate it in the second half, preferring to maintain the lead than to add to it.
However, With 8 minutes left Brazilian forward Joelinton ended his 20-game barren run in front of goal to add to the scoreline.
The visitors got a consolation four minutes from the regulation time through Jordan Williams for an aggregate scoreline of 5-2.
Newcastle will now face another League one team, Oxford United in the fourth round on the 25th of January at the St James Park as well after they beat Hartlepool in the 3rd round 4-1.
Until then, Newcastle will play next in the English Premier League this weekend on Saturday with Chelsea’s visit before travelling to Goodison Park to face Everton as they aim to improve on their thirteenth place standing.
In other FA Cup replays, Tottenham managed to see off a scare from Championship side Middlesbrough with a 2-1 win at the new White Hart Lane for a 3-2 aggregate result, with two first-half goals from Argentines, Giovanni Lo Celso and Erik Lamela.
Jose Mourinho’s side will now face Southampton in the next round.
Other results include Shrewsbury’s 1-0 win against Bristol City, Coventry’s 3-0 thrashing of Bristol Rovers and Blackpool losing 2-0 to Reading.
Today Manchester United will face Wolves in the FA Cup. Man United are backed at 1.84 to defeat Wolves, while Wolves are set at 3.62.
