Former Celtic star Alan Thompson supports the club in their reported decision to sign Atletico Madrid’s teenage prospect, Rodrigo Riquelme.
The club ex-star said if the lad finally makes a move to Parkhead, he could foresee the young midfielder grow into one of the finest footballers and follow the steps of Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama, who came into the club as an unpopular player and left for big-money deals.
A news outlet in Spain had claimed earlier this month that both Celtic and rivals; Rangers have been showing interest in the teenager who has high versatility in playing in various positions at the front [both flanks, No. 10 role, and as a forward.] However, Riquelme’s contract is due to expire in the summer.
The reports also added that a German side – Hoffenheim and various EPL are also courting the 19-year old who has a release clause set at £27million and boasts of two senior appearances for Diego Simeone’s men.
Ex Celtic hero Thompson has, however, pleaded with his side to make the first move to sign the forward ahead of Rangers. He said the Atleti product could be another unknown bargain buy and leave for big money in the nearest future.
He continued, “Celtic has got a rich history of developing young players from big clubs in Europe. With players such as Van Dijk, Wanyama, Edouard, and Dembele”. They have got a proper antecedent of doing that which has been working for them, selling them for huge money and I think to make such transfer happen is worth the go “.
If Celtic could get their hands on such a wonderful talent like Riquelme, it will bolster the squad and possibly their finances in the future.
