Hertha Berlin striker Krzysztof Piatek has been ruled out of Poland’s Euro 2020 campaign as he picked up an ankle injury during the club’s 2-1 win over Schalke 04 on Wednesday.
Piatek sustained the injury during the second half of the game and had to walk off the field. Scans later revealed that it is a major fracture and needs a long time to recover.
“Surgery is necessary. A three or four-month break is awaiting the player,” said national team doctor Jacek Jaroszewski in a statement from the Polish FA.
The striker is quite disappointed to miss the tournament but is hopeful that he will be able to make a quick recovery to get back to the field as soon as possible.
“Last 36 hours was difficult for me. Injury eliminates me from #euro2020 which I was dreaming about so much. However, I believe that in football, as in life, nothing happens without a reason. I know that God must have a plan for me,” Piatek tweeted from his official Twitter handle.
“My recovery begins today and that’s the only thing I need to focus on. I’m ready for it. I will do everything to come back stronger than ever. Thank you for all words of support, it means a lot for me. I keep my fingers crossed for my teammates in @HerthaBSC and @LaczyNasPilka,” he added.
The 25-year-old striker has made 18 appearances for Poland at the international level and has scored eight goals for them. That sums up how important a player he has been for the Polish side ever since he made his debut in 2018.
Moreover, he was seen in decent form of late. In 45 appearances for Hertha Berlin this season, Piatek had scored a total of 11 goals. Poland face Slovakia in their opening match of Euro 2020. They have been placed in Group E, which also consists of Spain and Sweden.
