There has been a lot of talk about France’s quality in attack. Les Bleus’ attacking trio of Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud has given them several plaudits over the last few years including the 2018 World Cup. Moreover, the addition of Karim Benzema has made the attack look even more dangerous.
However, France coach Didier Deschamps has acknowledged that he is aware of how potent the German attack can be. German aren’t entering the tournament in the best of forms as they have lost against North Macedonia and been hammered by Spain in the last 12 months. But they still possess some world class players and Didier Deschamps is wary of that.
“There is individual quality in each position but the players can play in very different positions, they can be flexible, which is difficult to play against,” Deschamps told a news conference on Monday.
“There are players like (Timo) Werner or (Leroy) Sane who have a very different playing style and tomorrow we will see who is playing in attack for Germany.
“Their attackers are important for the German team, and we have to try stop them having an impact on the game and how successful we are depends how we move and are positioned on the pitch.”
France face Germany in their opening game in Group F on Tuesday in Munich. The group also contains Portugal and Hungary making it one of the hardest groups possible as France, Germany and Portugal have all won major tournaments in the last 8 years.
Didier Deschamps realises how important it is to start a major tournament on a positive note, especially when they are placed in such a hard group.
“The reality is that the first match is important but it is not decisive, both teams have two more matches after this,” Deschamps added.
“The quality of our opponent we face tomorrow turns the match into a fantastic encounter. We are two of the best teams in Europe, it is all about who can be clinical and take chances.”
