Portugal talisman Cristiano Ronaldo has once again written his name in the history books. Ronaldo scored a brace against Hungary in Portugal’s opener against Hungary in the ongoing Euro 2020. Thus, Ronaldo has now become the highest goal-scorer in Euro history with 11 goals to his name.
Before the start of the game, the star striker was tied with France’s Michel Platini, who had scored nine goals in five Euro matches. Former England forward Alan Shearer is third on the list with seven goals in the tournament.
Ronaldo went past Platini’s record when he converted the penalty in the 87th minute to give a 2-0 lead to his team. The legendary footballer scored his second of the day in the injury time when he broke through Hungary’s defence.
In fact, Ronaldo had struggled to get going in the first 80 minutes of play as he failed to create many chances for his team. It was in the 84th minute when Portugal were able to break the deadlock after Raphael Guerreiro found the back of the net after a deflected shot left Hungary’s goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi with no chance to make the save.
On the other hand, a 3-0 scoreline didn’t justify Hungary’s heroic effort. They were brilliant in their defence and kept the defending champions at bay in the first 80 minutes. Portugal were able to dominate possession by 70% but they were frustrated by Hungary’s resistance.
Meanwhile, this is a great start for Portugal and they will look to continue the good show. Portugal is in Group F of Euro 2020, which is the group of death as two European heavyweights – Germany and France are also part of the group.
