Although there are eight teams left in the Euro 2024 championship going on in Germany as it enters the quarterfinal stage, it still feels like an underwhelming competition not only on the larger stage but also for some of the players who are still involved.
England is one of the teams that will start the quarterfinal stage this weekend, with a match against Switzerland imminent. However, one player is open to showing what he has to offer as England continues to struggle in front of goal through the competition.
Brentford’s Ivan Toney has only played a single minute of the competition despite England playing four matches already. In the final minutes of the regular 90 minutes in England’s 2-1 win over Slovakia in the round of 16, Toney was brought in as a substitute for the Three Lions of England, who were trailing Slovakia 1-0 at that time.
England scored a minute later through Jude Bellingham’s fantastic overhead kick to force extra time before Harry Kane sealed their quarterfinals tickets.
Ahead of Saturday’s fixture in Dusseldorf, Ivan Toney has revealed that he is disappointed at the lack of playing time in Germany as he is used to playing every week at the club level.
“Yes, I was annoyed, but there was still 30 minutes of football to play [including extra-time], and you have got to come out of that mood and focus. It’s always going to be tough. It’s tough for all of us as we play week in and week out for our clubs. I have been in this position before, and when I get an opportunity, I’ll take it.” Toney said.
In the quarterfinal of the competition, the host country, Germany, will face Spain on Friday, while France will play Portugal. England will battle Switzerland after getting past Slovakia, while Turkey’s gain for beating hard-fighting Austria is a fixture against the Netherlands.
