Liverpool’s head coach Jurgen Klopp admitted that display against Manchester United won’t be enough if they are to win the Premier League title. Liverpool had a two-point lead against Arsenal but shared the spoils against the Red Devils at Old Trafford on Sunday in a 2-2 draw.
The visitors had plenty of chances in the first half but they could not grab them. Luis Diaz scored in the 23rd minute after a cross from the corner to put his team in front.
But Manchester United bounced back in the second half with skipper Bruno Fernandes scoring from just ahead of the midway line after a mistake from Quansah. Subsequently, 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo scored a spectacular goal in the 67th minute to put the home team in front.
However, the Reds equalized with Mohamed Salah scoring from the spot kick in the 84th minute.
When asked if he expects twists in the title race, Klopp said: “It is likely …. You have to win a lot of football games. You cannot do what we did today. That will not be enough, definitely not, but we know that. Still, if you work with human beings if you have to just take the things you get.
“I saw the boys wanting. I saw a top team today in a difficult away game. A lot of teams usually come to United and people care a little more, but for us coming here it’s game one, it’s tricky.”
In 2022, Manchester City was able to win the Premier League title by one point with Liverpool hot on their heels.
When asked how much the look of the Premier League table matters, Klopp said: “It matters after 38 matchdays. It matters a lot after 38 matchdays.
“People will tell us we need to chase goal difference, but that doesn’t happen on purpose. You don’t go into a game and want to score eight goals. We are who we are, we are how we are, and that’s why we are in the race, so I’m absolutely fine with that. I knew it would be super tricky until the end.
“We were top; now it’s Arsenal…. We want to be there after the last matchday.”
Liverpool will next take on Atalanta in the first-leg quarterfinal of the Champions League on Thursday night.
