Fabrizio Romano has revealed that negotiations between Manchester United and David de Gea for a new contract are at an advanced stage. De Gea’s current contract at Old Trafford expires this summer, and recent mistakes in matches against Sevilla and West Ham have led to speculation about his future at the club.
Earlier this week, Manchester United was linked with a potential move for Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, and there have been reports of interest in Brentford’s David Raya as well. Manager Erik ten Hag’s style of play requires a goalkeeper who is strong in playing the ball, an area in which De Gea has needed improvement this season.
However, the importance of shot-stopping cannot be overlooked, and De Gea recently won the Premier League’s Golden Glove award for the 2022/23 season. Ten Hag acknowledged this achievement following De Gea’s mistake in the 1-0 defeat against West Ham earlier this month, emphasizing that mistakes are part of the game and the team as a whole must take responsibility.
Now, it seems that De Gea is on the verge of signing a new contract with Manchester United. Romano, in an interview with GiveMeSport, revealed that discussions have been focused on reducing De Gea’s salary while exploring a different structure for the contract, potentially with a longer duration. However, the negotiations have progressed significantly.
Both De Gea and Manchester United are keen to continue their association, and manager Erik ten Hag has been clear about his desire to keep the goalkeeper at the club. The final details of the contract are being worked out, and it is expected to be completed soon.
If De Gea remains at Manchester United beyond this season, he will be the last player remaining from the Sir Alex Ferguson era at the club. Phil Jones, the only other player still with the team, is anticipated to be released at the end of his contract in June.
