It is hard to talk about the best strikers in Norwich City history and not include Darren Huckerby.
He was with Norwich City from 2003 to 2008 and was one of the keys to getting the team into the Premier League in the 2003-2004 season. That stay lasted only one year but he did his part.
Huckerby proved his worth at the highest level of English football. Fans still hold Huckerby in a very high regard. He joined Norwich City from Manchester City in September 2003 and scored three goals in his first five games. The talented striker initially came over on a loan but he signed with Norwich City permanently on Boxing Day that year. The deal was worth a reported £750,000 fee.
Darren Huckerby last played for Norwich City in May 2008 but sadly he never got a proper chance to say goodbye. Glenn Roeder, Norwich City’s manager at the time, announced that Huckerby would not receive a new contract in 2008. He told BBC Radio Norfolk how the news was broken to him.
“I got called into the office, 10 seconds later I was gone, that’s how it was, 10 minutes after that it was on Sky Sports News, before my wife and family knew,” Huckerby said.
“It could have been handled better, let’s put it that way.”
He played in 203 games for Norwich City and score 43 goals. His next stop would be the San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS and he retired from football in September 2009.
