Some Atletico Madrid fans recently pointed out that they don’t want Cristiano Ronaldo joining their team by displaying a banner that read ‘CR7 not welcome’ in the first preseason game.
CR7 reportedly sent a transfer request to Manchester United and he has been linked to a number of European team, including Atletico Madrid — however, some of their fans don’t seem to like the idea.
Once the news broke out, fan group Union Internacional de Peñas released a statement expressing why they’re opposed to the idea of signing CR7, saying he represents the ‘antithesis of our values,’ and thus they would not accept him in the team even if he helps secure titles.
In addition to this, a group of fans who attended Atletico’s first preseason friendly against Numancia let the board of directors know they do not want Ronaldo at the club, revealing a banner that read ‘CR7 not welcome,’ and chanting against this. CR7 fired back.
Atletico Madrid fans have never liked Ronaldo, that’s no secret. Though he is one of the greatest soccer players of all-time, they have reasons not to him, as he’s a Real Madrid icon who thrived against them.
Ronaldo replied to an Instagram post showing the banner reaction with crying laughter emojis. Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo, on the other hand, ruled out any possibility of seeing CR7 at the Wanda Metropolitano this season.
“I’ve said it many times. I don’t know who invented the story about Cristiano. But I’ll tell you, it’s practically impossible for him to come to Atletico Madrid,” Cerezo said on Spanish radio show El Partidazo de COPE.
Cristiano Ronaldo also reacted to the transfer rumors: “Impossible not to talk about me one day. Otherwise, the press makes no money. You know that if you don’t lie you can’t get people’s attention. Keep going that one day you got some news right,” Ronaldo taking a shot at the media.
Ronaldo’s future is a big question mark. New Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said he counts on him but CR7 is clearly interested in leaving for a team that can play the UEFA Champions League next season.
