Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to show respect to his manager Erik Ten Hag. Johnson believes that respect should be mutual between individuals but Ronaldo needs to be a team player.
Ronaldo had walked off before the final whistle was blown by the referee against Tottenham Hotspur, which created a lot of controversies. Surprisingly, the Red Devils were leading by 2-0 at that stage against the visitors but the talisman had seen enough and decided to walk off. Ronaldo admitted that he made a mistake in the heat of the moment.
Earlier, Ronaldo had also walked off after half-time against Rayo Vallecano in the practice match.
However, Erik Ten Hag later revealed that the Portuguese refused to come on against the Lilywhites. Ronaldo was then dropped from Manchester United’s squad in the match against Chelsea, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Glen Johnson said while talking to Daily Star, “Respect is mutual. No player can do what they want, the team is more important than one player, I don’t care who it is. Both Ten Hag and Ronaldo need to show respect to each other, of course, Ronaldo deserves respect for what he’s done. But then he needs to respect his manager.
“If the team is winning, players who are not playing need to shut up, there’s a time and a place when you’re banging on the manager’s door, and that’s when you’re not playing when the team is losing every week.”
Meanwhile, Ronaldo has been kept on the bench by Erik Ten Hag, which has left the Portuguese frustrated. Ronaldo has not started consistently in the ongoing season and he has scored twice in the 12 matches he has played across all competitions.
