Inter Milan got the job done on Tuesday night when they defeated SS Lazio 2-0 in the Coppa Italia Quarterfinals.
This victory secured a semifinal ticket for the Nerazurri, where they will face city rivals AC Milan, who defeated them 3-2 in the Supercoppa Italia final.
Simone Inzaghi’s men have less of the possession against a Lazio side that looked determined to defeat them but scored against the run of play through a stunning Marko Arnautovic volley.
Lazio continued to press for an equalizer in the second half, but Inter got the job done when Hakan Calhanoglu made it two via a penalty kick.
They will now be looking forward to a Derby della Madonnina in the semifinals.
Lazio, with early possession and a couple of excellent chances, failed to register a goal. Gustav Isaksen got the best chance in the first half, but Josep Martinez denied the Denmark international twice.
Inter right-back Matteo Darmian suffered a muscle injury midway through the first half and was replaced by Denzel Dumfries.
The Biancocelesti were dangerous with their well-executed counter-attacks but got punished by the hosts, who took the lead minutes before the half-time break with a stunning Marko Arnautovic volley from the edge of the box.
Lazio had another chance for the equaliser in the second half through Isaksen, who once again found Martinez on his way, while Dumfries won an aerial duel with Mattia Zaccagni in front of an empty Inter goal.
Inter then doubled their lead around the hour mark as ex-Lazio star Joaquin Correa, who had been introduced as a substitute, earned a penalty kick from a Samuel Gigot foul.
Calhanoglu, another Inter substitute, made no mistake in scoring his sixth goal against Lazio by sending Christos Mandas the wrong way.
