The blues have been drawn to play against the Red Devils in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after their 7-1 thumping of Grimsby Town.
Frank Lampard’s lads are now set to play Manchester United in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after an emphatic victory over league two side’s Grimsby Town. The win was Frank Lampard’s first home win since taking over the reins at Stamford Bridge. The gaffer handed debuts to four academy graduates as well as a debut for young midfielder Billy Gilmour.
Ross Barkley opened the scoring for the blues in the fourth minute. Michy Batshuayi doubled the Blues advantage in the seventh minute his first goal for the blues since January 2018. Further goals from Pedro Rodríguez, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Kurt Zouma including a second goal from Batshuayi ensured the blues passage to the next round of the Carabao cup.
Manchester United also advanced to the next round of the Carabao Cup after overcoming a massive scare against league one side Rochdale A. F. C. The Reds defeated the league one side on a penalty shoot-out after being held to a draw in normal time at Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s lads were poor in front of the goal, having wasted a couple of chances. Mason Greenwood put the Red Devils ahead in the 68th minute with a thunderous strike. Luke Matheson scored in the 76th minute to draw Rochdale level. Both sides couldn’t find the back of the net in the remainder of the game and needed penalty kicks to find a winner. The Red Devils converted all their spot-kicks while a miss from Rochdale midfielder Jimmy Keohane saw the league one side exit the competition.
This will be the first meeting between the two clubs in the League Cup since October 2012 when the Blues beat the Reds 5-4. The game has been scheduled for either 29 or 30 October.
Other fourth-round fixtures include:
Everton vs. Watford
Aston Villa vs. Wolverhampton wanderers
Manchester City vs. Southampton
Burton vs. Leicester City
Crawley vs. Colchester
Oxford United vs. Sunderland
Liverpool vs. Arsenal
Manchester United are backed at 13.25 to win the Carabao Cup, while Chelsea are set at 8.75 to win the title,
