Despite only being linked with Manchester City earlier, Spanish full-back Marc Cucurella joined London club Chelsea, for £50M on Wednesday evening, or so it seemed.
Cucurella joined the Seagulls from Getafe last season, making 35 appearances for the club. During the summer, the 24-year-old was courted by Manchester City, but the Champions felt the price tag of £50m was too high and abandoned the deal.
The player had turned in a transfer request with City offering just £30M, but Brighton held on for a fee worth £50m for the Spain international.
The 24-year-old has one cap for the Spanish national team but was a part of the Olympic team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics last summer, winning the silver medal with Spain’s Olympic team.
Marc Cucurella would have become Chelsea’s third signing of the summer after bringing in Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli and Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, but Brighton denied any agreement with any club for the defender on their social media platform.
The statement came on the backdrop of various Media reports that claimed that Cucurella had been signed by Chelsea in a 50 million-pound deal.
“CLUB STATEMENT: MARC CUCURELLA. Contrary to inaccurate reports from numerous media outlets this evening, no agreement has been reached with any club to sell Marc Cucurella.” The statement read on Twitter.
It is left to be seen what twist is left in this particular transfer activity between Brighton and Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Chelsea faces Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, August 6, when the Premier League resumes for the 2020/2023 season.
Unfortunately for the Toffees, they will be without their striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin who sustained a freak injury sustained a freak injury.
The English striker was only able to play teen games for Everton last season after he missed four months out due to muscle problems. Therefore, Frank Lampard, manager of the side, is hoping that the injury is not a long-term one.
With Richarlison’s exit to Spurs, Lampard will have to turn to Alex Iwobi, Solomon Rondon, Demarai Gray, and Anthony Gordon for the goals on Saturday.
